The (Not Quite) Tiny Home Is Finished!

The (Not Quite) Tiny Home Is Finished!

Our post from September 4, 2024 discusses the tiny home we were planning to build in Davidson. Well, as of August 2025, the tiny home is complete, and it’s a beauty!

First, we need to clarify some nomenclature. This home is what I would call “not quite” tiny. Based on the definitions of the North Carolina Residential Code, a true tiny home has 400 square feet of living space or less, and is built on a movable foundation. Our home came in at 907 heated square feet, and it was built on a permanent foundation. So, it’s more accurate to call it the “not quite” tiny home.

Regardless of size, this home is amazing. From the front it looks like other homes on the street, James Alexander Way in Davidson. At 42 feet in width it’s actually wider than it’s immediate neighbors. But, take a look from the side and you’ll see that it is a very unique footprint. At only 12 feet in depth, many passersby would ask “where’s the back half of the house?”

We sold this home before we started construction, and our customer worked with Kathryn Lilly Interiors to select the fit and finish of the home. The crisp white exterior coupled with extensive stonework on the foundation made for a great pairing. Inside, custom cabinetry, hardwood flooring throughout, a barn door, and detailed tile work in the bathrooms makes this home “pop.” While the house may be “not quite tiny,” the details and level of quality are anything but.

This was our smallest new home build ever, but in terms of enjoyment it was one of our largest projects. We’d love to have the opportunity to build more homes like this one.

A special shout out to Dave O’Bryan of LaBella Architects who came up with this plan.
