John Marshall Custom Homes is pleased to announce that we have won First Place in the home remodeling category in the 2021 Lake Norman Homebuilder’s “Best of the Lake” competition for our mill house project at 703 Dogwood Lane in Davidson. The mill house, originally located at 324 Delburg Street in Davidson, was moved to Dogwood Lane and updated in 2020.
Originally built in the 1930s as part of the Palomino Mill Village, the mill house undoubtedly once housed workers at the Davidson Cotton Mill just up the street. When John Marshall Custom Homes bought the property at 324 Delburg Street for redevelopment, the mill house was one of the few remaining such homes in Davidson. Rather than demolish the house, we decided to move it to 703 Dogwood Lane and refurbish it.
In addition to placing the home on a new foundation, which like all of our new homes was sealed and conditioned, we added on about 250 square feet to the home to create a true owner’s suite, as well as opened up the floor plan by removing some interior walls. Other new features include all new highly efficient HVAC, electrical and plumbing, as well as new fit and finishes throughout. We kept the original hardwoods of the house, and reutilized some of the structural beams to make a custom desktop for the owner’s office.
A highlight of the home, both structurally and aesthetically, are two large “glulam” beams which are finished and whitewashed and support a newly vaulted ceiling. Raising the ceiling also allowed us to add a loft area which is accessible by a custom built ship’s ladder.
